Timed race or untimed rally?
The biggest difference between Balkan rallies is the clock. Olympia, Hellas, Albania, Greece Rally and Dinaric Rally are timed races with results per stage. Bosnia Rally is untimed: riders are not ranked on speed, which makes it popular as a navigation training camp.
Dinaric Rally offers both in one event. The rally class is a timed race; DARE! uses the same stages, roadbooks and safety set-up, but without the stopwatch. You can come to learn, and come back to race.
Riding a big adventure bike?
Many Balkan rallies welcome adventure bikes such as the BMW GS, Honda Africa Twin, Yamaha Ténéré or KTM Adventure. Hellas Rally has an Adventure class, and Bosnia Rally offers a separate track that avoids the hardest sections.
At Dinaric Rally, adventure bikes can race in the Rally class or ride DARE!. A big bike has won the motorcycle overall two years in a row, both times with a German rider: Mike Wiedeman on a Yamaha Ténéré 700 in 2025 and Maxi Schek on a BMW R 12 G/S in 2026. The terrain is rocky and the days are long: ride a bike you can pick up on your own, fit strong tyres and check the minimum fuel range in the regulations. Dinaric Rally or Bosnia Rally?
Both take place in the Dinaric Alps, a month apart, and many riders do both. Bosnia Rally (Kupres, July) is an untimed rally from a fixed base, with roadbook or GPS navigation. Dinaric Rally (Knin, late August) is a timed race with a prologue, five stages and a marathon stage, roadbook only, with the untimed DARE! class for first-timers.
If you want to learn navigation without pressure, Bosnia Rally or DARE! are both good starts. If you want a real race result, FIM Europe Open status and a marathon bivouac, choose Dinaric Rally. See the full comparison: Dinaric Rally or Bosnia Rally?
